Small City Girl Moves To The Mother City
Welcome back to my blog!
My 30th birthday came with a lot of changes!
I’ve mentioned to you guys how I’ve been feeling unaccomplished and frustrated at my lack of employment and how stagnant my life had become in my hometown. I desperately needed a change so I decided to come and try my luck with my sister in Cape Town and see if I can build a life for myself here.
Travelling during Covid is a strange experience, my family wasn’t even allowed inside the airport, so we had to say our goodbyes in the drop off area. There also weren’t any snacks or drinks served onboard. It was only a one-and-a-half-hour flight but still…
I’m not going to lie, I’m fucken nervous but also super excited at the prospect of a new life filled with new adventures and new people. Who knows, maybe I’ll meet the love of my life.
The decision to move and the move itself happened quite suddenly. My sister needed a flatmate and I needed a change of scenery so she suggested to my dad that he cover the other half of her rent and let me move in with her to see if I can find a job.
Surprisingly, he agreed and now here I am…
I landed here on Saturday the 3rd of July and my sister picked me up from the airport. Man, how she’s grown!
The view here is absolutely stunning, such a peaceful and beautiful place to wake up to every day. It’s also very quiet here unlike at home where there are taxis constantly driving up and down and cars parked outside playing loud music.
I will not miss that spaza shop across the road!
The last time I was here, my sister was still a student, and I watched the Justin Bieber concert (this was like 3/4 years ago). I didn’t stay that long and didn’t get to see many places.
One place I was really hoping to see back then (that my sister now says actually isn’t all that) is Charlie’s Bakery. If memory serves correct, we drove past it on the way to the stadium to watch the concert.
Packing to come here was a whole other thing. I have never had to basically pack my entire life and move before. The last time I didn’t live at home was when I gave varsity a try.
Imagine, I’ve moved to a new city in the hopes of finding a job, during a PANDEMIC…
WHAT I’M HOPING TO ACHIEVE IN CAPE TOWN
I hope that over my first few months here, I’ll find a good job and stand on my own two feet.
I’m hoping Cape Town will breed new inspiration for my blog and life and that I’ll be able to make a life for myself that I thoroughly enjoy and don’t need an escape from.
I can’t wait to find a good job and finally be financially independent. Damn, there’s nothing that frustrates me more than having to rely on someone else to cover my expenses; especially at my age.
WHAT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO
- the nightlife
- trying to find my way around and getting lost lol
- the lifestyle
- meeting new people
- growing as a person and really finding myself
- trying out new bars and restaurants (I love food)
- starting a new career (of course)
Covid and lockdown have changed the way things operate so much. I hope to be here long enough to experience things here when everything is fully operational and back to “normal” i.e when the alcohol ban is lifted and I can go out and check out all the bars and drinking spots.
I have a few friends living here already so I’m glad I have people (I mean besides my sister) to show me around.
I’ll probably be sharing all my adventures (and misadventures) with you guys so stay tuned!
Cannot wait to see what Cape Town has in store for me.
